Not promoting anything here, but thanks to a cool promotion at Blockbuster, I've got unlimited free rentals until the beginning of next month. And, I'm using this opportunity to watch all the movies I've missed over the last year and change.
Film #7:
Greenberg
I liked Noah Baumbach's The Squid and the Whale. I didn't love it. I wasn't the audience for it. Nothing for me to identify with.
Never saw Margo at the Wedding. Looked too dark for my tastes. And, I'm always up for dark stuff. Okay - so the truth is that I simply forgot it existed until I rented this flick.
Greenberg is, by far, Baumbach's finest work to date. Ben Stiller is fantastic in this, and I feel he should've gotten more love during awards season. Ah well.
Speaking of "ah"...
Ah, Greta Gerwig. How I've loved you since Ti West's The House of the Devil. The choices this lady makes. My God. Everything feels natural. But, it doesn't feel amateurish. Gerwig may actually be this generation of actors' best kept secret. I hope to see her again and again for years to come.
This movie is a great watch, but like The Squid and the Whale, the ending left me wanting. Wanting what? I don't know. I wasn't expecting "happily ever after." That would have felt like bullshit after watching ninety minutes of this specific film. But, I just felt the story wasn't complete.
Ah well. (4 1/2 out of 5)
