Not promoting anything here, but thanks to a cool promotion at Blockbuster, I've got unlimited free rentals until the beginning of next month. And, I'm using this opportunity to watch all the movies I've missed over the last year and change.
Film #12:
Megamind
Megamind is not a bad movie. It's also not a great movie. It's not a good movie either. So, what is it? It's okay, decent. I may watch it again sometime, but I don't have any real desire to re-watch it anytime soon.
I loved the voices of Will Ferrell, Tina Fey, and Jonah Hill. David Cross is always awesome. Brad Pitt works in concept but not in payoff. Honestly, they needed a voice more recognizable, or one not from someone famous. I liked the story. I liked how it showed that we all are who we are. Some go the way of Peter Parker, following the philosophy that "with great power, comes great responsibility." Others, don't give a shit. They get power - born into it or gained - and they become villainous assholes. That's the way the world works. Megamind has to realize that, and when he does, it's nice to see the transition that follows.
The animation looks good, but where were the people of the city. I mean, Metro City looks huge. But, when the shit goes down and there's all this destruction, where are the people? Are we to assume that these invisible people all died? Crazy shit. And, I feel conflicted about it. I like weird stuff, but this seemed flawed more than anything else to me.
I also didn't care for the use of the music throughout. Don't get me wrong, I like Ozzy and Guns N' Roses, but why does every movie like this have to have people dancing to some pop song. My God, what did Shrek do to family films?
All in all, though, I didn't hate anything. That's the truth. So, here's my rating: 3 1/2 out of 5.
