Not promoting anything here, but thanks to a cool promotion at Blockbuster, I've got unlimited free rentals until the beginning of next month. And, I'm using this opportunity to watch all the movies I've missed over the last year and change.
Film #6:
Fair Game (2010)
God, how I love Naomi Watts so much. Even in terrible movies (lookin' at you, The Ring Two) I enjoy watching her. And, yeah, sure - she's definitely a looker - but she always seems watchable. She never halfasses anything. How can she not have an Oscar by now?
Mulholland Dr. was amazing. She was amazing in it. 21 Grams? Forget about it. She was even great in Peter Jackson's 2005 King Kong. Really. Anyone who can get me to buy that she loved that ape (an ape that wasn't there - though she did act alongside Andy Serkis) deserves to be noticed.
Fair Game is another example of just how great Watts is. To be fair, this movie is about two individuals, so Sean Penn certainly gets about half of the film's screen time, and he's good. I mean, he's always good. Even in the overrated Mystic River he was good. But, I found myself wanting to follow Watts's Valerie Plame everytime the story went with Penn's Joseph Wilson. Of course, she's found a place in my cinematic heart, but still...
Of course, her story does follow her life as a CIA operative and fallout of her being outed to the public, so it could be that the juicier story simply fell to Watts. So be it. All in all, the script made me care. The actors kept me focused. And, Doug Liman did an excellent job of keeping things moving and not being too political. After all, this movie is about Valerie and Joseph. Period.
I wanted more. Guess I have to read their books. (4 1/2 out of 5)
