Not promoting anything here, but thanks to a cool promotion at Blockbuster, I've got unlimited free rentals until the beginning of next month. And, I'm using this opportunity to watch all the movies I've missed over the last year and change.
Film #13:
Superman/Batman: Apocalypse
The tragedy of this DC animation film is that it was too short. The first half was well-paced, but everything happened quick in the latter half. I suppose it may come down to budget. Perhaps director Lauren Montgomery knew the movie would be short because that is all she could accomplish with the money given to her and her team.
Then again, I never read passed issue one of Superman/Batman (in comic form), and that had more to do with lack of money, too. The thing is, for all I know, the issues adapted here told the story just as fast.
Either way, it's a shame, because the movie is pretty wonderful. Seeing the big three from the DC Universe side-by-side is always a great thing to behold. Summer Glau as Supergirl was inspired.
That reminds me. I should point out that although this story definitely has a villain in the form of Darkseid (pronounced "dark-side"), this is really Kara Zor-El's story. Who is Kara Zor-El? Why, Supergirl, of course. See the beginning of her journey here.
The animation looked great, the voices were good (though Darkseid's could have been more ominous), and the story kept me watching. If the picture above does anything for you, I'd strongly reccommend it. Though, you've probably seen it by now. If the picture above does nothing, or makes you roll your eyes, or makes you laugh, then you probably haven't read this far.
In the end: 4 out of 5.
